Non Toxic Beauty

Hello. My name is Stephanie and I'm a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. This title is sometimes associated with a company called Beautycounter, as many of my FNTP colleagues sell Beautycounter products. But I don't. To be honest, I didn't like any of the products that I tried from them. I've only tried three items, but still... I'm not a fan. The company has an amazing mission, but I feel like there are a bunch of other non-toxic beauty brands on the market with a similar mission who sell their products at a more affordable price point, and aren't associated with a pyramid scheme or multi-level marketing.

I take my health seriously. So with that comes the use of non-toxic beauty products. Because what I put on my body is just as important as the food I put into it. As the saying goes, "You are what you eat." But you're also what you absorb. This is why I choose to keep far, far away from anything from Bath and Body Works. Plus, their products always made me break out into contact dermatitis. I suspect they contain load of gluten and other nasty chemical ingredients, and I'm not into that.

When I shop for beauty products, I look for the cleanest ones with the best quality ingredients. Yes, I often pay more for quality. But I think it's worth it to know that a bunch of chemicals and preservatives are not in the products I use. So let me share with you some of my favorite non-toxic beauty products. Perhaps you've tried a few. Or perhaps you'll find some of your new favorites from this list.

Shampoo and Conditioner

By far my favorite shampoo and conditioner comes from Griffin Remedy. There's nothing too fancy about this company. They keep their products rather simple. And to me, that's a good thing. I've been using their hair care products for nearly four years. I've tried 5 different varieties of their shampoo and conditioner. Currently I'm loving their Scalp Therapy line.

Hairspray

I don't do much hair styling. But when I do, I opt for a clean hairspray from Kettle Care Organics. I've tried other natural hairsprays and they didn't work well. But this stuff works for what I need it to do. I always buy the travel size so I can take it with me in my gym bag, when I travel, or where ever.

Dry Shampoo

I don't like washing my hair too often since it's not good for it. So I use dry shampoo between washes. I currently use and love the dry shampoo for brunette hair from Acure. Here's a tip: put it on at night before you go to bed and rub it through your hair. Then when you wake up the next morning, you'll be ready to go without having to deal with powdery residue (which is very minor from this product anyway compared to other powdered dry shampoos).

Deodorant

The best non-toxic deodorant I have tried comes from Humble Brands. Their original deodorants contain only 5 ingredients, and all of these ingredients come from clean sources. Plus this stuff actually works. At least it does for me. My current favorite scent is Mountain Lavender & Holy Basil. I've also tried their CBD-infused Mountain Lavender and was quite impressed. Primally Pure makes a great natural deodorant as well.

Body Lotion

I really like the super clean body lotions from Griffin Remedy. I get these lotions from my local Co-Op. I love how this company has bulk items available for purchase as well to help the environment. Their mission is to provide ultra clean products at a reasonable price. I'm hooked! As a bonus, every single product they sell is certified gluten free, vegan, organic, all natural and paraben-free. Not many companies can claim all of this. At least not at these prices.

Cosmetics

I don't actually wear makeup that often. But when I do, I prefer to use ultra clean makeup that's not full of crap. Honeybee Gardens products are the best I have found for an affordable price. They have amazing mineral based eye shadows that stay on all day. Tippy Taupe is my signature color, and I buy it at Natural Grocers. I also love their lipsticks and complexion perfecting blush. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of their mascara. For mascara, I buy W3LL PEOPLE brand from Thrive Market.

Lip Balm

If you're not into wearing lipstick but you still want something for your lips, you'll find a great non-toxic lip balm from Balm of Gilead. Tallow is the main ingredient, which leaves lips ultra moisturized. I've tried all of their varieties and I'm a fan of each one. This stuff lasts a long time and is super nourishing without being full of chemicals. All of their lip balms are certified Paleo. However, because of the tallow balm that they use as the balm base, these products aren't vegan. But I'm 100% okay with that.

Face Wash

Green Goo makes my favorite face wash / makeup remover. This stuff is so clean. It's just a bunch of oils and organic plant extracts. It leaves my skin feeling so smooth after a wash. A little goes a long way with this stuff, and a bottle lasts me quite a long time.

Skin Salve

If your skin needs a little extra TLC, I highly recommend the skin healer salve from Indian Meadow Herbals. This is a great clean product that helps get me through the winter months when my skin becomes extra dry from the high desert climate in Idaho. I break out into an eczema rash on my palms if I consume gluten. But I apply this skin healing salve and the eczema disappears pretty quickly. I've been really impressed with this product. Other people have used it to treat rosacea and minor burns as well.

Night Cream

I use the Matcha Face Moisturizer from CocoKind as a night cream before going to bed. I've been using this stuff for nearly 3 years. I'm not going to say this is why I still get carded at 37 years old. But it definitely deserves some of the credit. Fair warning though, this stuff is a little greasy. So you probably wouldn't want to use it out in public.
