Celebrate National Watermelon Day

Today is National Watermelon Day! That's right. This hydrating fruit is getting some love. And with good reason too. Not only is it a beloved summer fruit; it also packs quite a few health benefits.

Watermelon is a good skin protectant. This is definitely needed this time of year. The antioxidants, beta carotene and vitamin C that are found in watermelon have been shown to play an important role in maintaining the health of the skin, especially as we age.

Watermelon can also boost immunity thanks to its high vitamin C content. Some studies also show that watermelon can help defend the body against heart disease and cancer.

About 90% of the melon is made up of water. So it's a great hydrating snack this time of year. Some studies show that watermelon can help aid in detox because of its high water content. The high water content helps the body detox and rid itself of excess fluids, relieving uncomfortable bloating and swelling.

If that's not enough, watermelon has also been shown to relieve muscle soreness, reduce acid reflux, boost eye health, and prevent kidney stones. Of course everyone is different, so you'll know whether or not watermelon is a good food for you. I loved eating watermelon in my backyard as a kid each summer. So I've rounded up a hodgepodge of watermelon recipes for you to enjoy. Some are kid friendly and some are a bit more sophisticated. But either way, you'll be enjoying the benefits of this delicious summer fruit. Happy Watermelon Day!

You can celebrate by making my simple Watermelon Salad with Honey Lime Vinaigrette (tag me @realfoodeducation if you do). You can also celebrate with these delicious recipes as well.
